THIS IS INDEED A VERY RARE FIND A BEAUTIFUL SWISS LEVER HALFHUNTER WRISTWATCH PRESENTED TO ONE OF OUR WAR HEROES. IN SHORT CAPT WHM SEEMINGLY

AWARDED DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDALS FOR HIS ACTIONS DURING THE 2ND BOER WAR AND VARIOUS OTHER AWARDS. ONLY TO BE REFUSED AN OFFICERS RATE OF PENSION AFTER HIS SERVICE IN WW1.  ( READ MORE BELOW )

THE WATCH HAS BEEN FULLY SERVICED IN OUR WORKSHOP AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE ORIGINAL OWNER WORE THE WATCH RARELY. PROBABLY A PRIZED MEMORY OF HIS ACTIONS AND HEROIC ESCAPADES OVER MANY YEARS OF BATTLE.  925 STIRLING SILVER  SCREW BACK CASE HALLMARKED 1916  JW CASE MAKER,

HALFHUNTER WATCHES WERE IDEAL TO PROTECT THE ENAMELLED DIAL, THE BUTTON AT 6 O'CLOCK WHEN PRESSED RELEASES THE SPRUNG LID. THE SOLID SILVER SCREW BACK

CASE WOULD HOUSE AND PROTECT THE SWISS LEVER MOVEMENT.

THE CASE IS IS AMAZING ORIGINAL CONDITION AND THE ENAMELED CHAPTER RING REMAINS IN TACT. EVEN THE ORIGINAL OUTER GLASS REMAINS. A PERIOD TAN STRAP HAS BEEN FITTED TO COMPLETE THE PACKAGE.. DIAL HAS PAINTED ARABIC NUMBERS AND SUBSIDIARY SECONDS DIAL.

A Distinguished Conduct Medal group of six to Captain W.H.M. Dow Royal Artillery, DCM (awarded during 2nd Boer War - 66435 Bty-Serjt:- Major W.H.M. Dow R.H.A.), QSA with clasps for Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and South Africa 1901 (66435 B.S. Major W.H.M. Dow O Bty R.H.A.); EVIIR LSGC (66435 Bty. Sjt. Mjr W.H.M. Dow R.H.A.); 1914-15 Star (Lieut. & Adjt W.H.M. Dow D.C.M. R.F.A.); 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal (Capt. W.H.M. Dow); together with parchment certificate of service, certificates of commission, various photographs of the recipient in portrait and during manoeuvres, and a large collection of other documents and ephemera. Captain Dow joined the Royal Artillery in 1888 at the age of 15 1/2. He served in the Boer War of 1899-1902 and was awarded the D.C.M.. Discharged in 1910, owing to medical reasons, he volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914, and rose to the rank of Captain. The documents offered with this lot include much correspondence that attests to the recipient's exceptional character, and also various letters recording a dispute with the War Office over its failure to grant him an Officer's rate of pension.
